BE HERE NOW

<sup>LKIF Gallery is pleased to present BE HERE NOW, an exhibition of new paintings by UK-based artist Sinéad Breslin for her Seoul debut.  

This show brings together a collection of works that speak of personal narratives, absurdity, and summer. Breslin’s often playful paintings explore symbolism and visual metaphors. She invites the viewer to observe both snapshots of her life and dreamlike episodes punctuated by feelings of joy, isolation, and anxiety. The eight paintings comprising BE HERE NOW are bursting with rich colours and gestural brushstrokes, and are contexualised against the backdrop of summer.

In On the Lawn (2023), Breslin shows a toddler on a vast yellow-green colourfield with two dogs, which may appear as guardian and predator. This piece is part of an ongoing series of paintings referencing her baby Oisín and his grandmother’s greyhounds. Here, Breslin cites her interest in spiritual meaning, concepts of heaven and hell, and angels and demons; she was raised as a Catholic and is fascinated by Buddist teachings and other religious doctrines. "I grew up with greyhounds; my mother has a mild obsession with these creatures – she keeps them as pets and trains them to race. They are incredibly athletic and majestic. For me they function as a vehicle to explore ideas within metaphysics. I also use the dogs to prompt ideas about negative and positive inner dialogue, protection and vulnerability, and concepts relating to otherworldly entities,” she added.

In Swimmer (2023), the largest painting in the exhibition, Breslin celebrates the timeless combination of unclothed bodies and water, which has preoccupied artists since classical antiquity. The image’s upper sky daubed in a pink hue appears dreamlike and speaks of another world, while the translucent plant adds a touch of absurdity. Is the swimmer gliding peacefully underwater on a hot summer’s day or is he trapped, frozen in time against the mosaic, under the weight of the dense green foliage?

“
I aim to create contemplative spaces that are playful, rhythmic, and captivating. My works are representational and obscure. I follow an Irish tradition of imbuing my paintings with a sense of the unreal where magic, fable, and allegory is explored.

There is a strong thread of expressionism in terms of line, colour, and psychological discernment. Isolated figures exist suspended within time and space.

Perspectives are flattened, colours are exaggerated, and settings are broken down into blocks, patterns, and shapes. There is often an undercurrent of anxiety flowing through my work; subjects can appear trapped – physically and psychologically – in deconstructed landscapes.

My subjects and the environments within which they exist are inextricably connected, the settings are an extension of the inner worlds of my protagonists.

<sup>LKIF Gallery는 쉬네드 브레슬린(b.1986, 영국, 소머셋)의 한국 첫 개인전 BE HERE NOW를 개최한다.

이 전시에서 브레슬린은 사적이고 터무니없는 여름의 조각들을 선보인다. 브레슬린은 그의 다양한 자전적 순간들에 대한 내러티브를 모호하게 만드는 추상적 제스처를 통해 현실과 밀착되어 있으면서도 동시에 환상과 사실주의가 섞인 화면을 만든다. 각 작품속에 등장하는 인물의 주변환경은 상징과 은유로 가득 차 현실과 꿈의 경계를 허물고, 형상과 배경의 긴밀한 관계는 묘한 긴장감을 자아낸다.  

브레슬린의 작품은 고유한 심리적 리듬을 전달한다. 브레슬린은 그의 작업에서 인물과 공간과의 관계설정이 인물의 내면이 외부로 확장되는 지점에서 중요하다고 말한다. 그가 사용하는 평면화된 원근, 과장된 색상팔레트, 은유적 모티브, 그리고 2차원적 패턴들은 모두 화면 속 불안정한 심리적 기류를 만들어내는 장치로서 기능한다.

<On the Lawn> 에는 황록빛 넓은 들판 위 한 아기와 두마리의 개가 보인다. 개는 보호자일수도, 혹은 포식자일 수도 있다. 이 작품은 작가의 아들과 그의 어머니가 기르는 그레이하운드를 주제로 하는 연작에 포함된다. 개는 브레슬린의 작업에 꾸준히 등장하는 모티브로, 카톨릭 신자로 자란 그녀가 영적인 것, 천사와 악마, 천국과 지옥과 같은 개념에 대한 관심을 투영하는 대상이다.

“저는 그레이하운드와 함께 자랐습니다. 어머니는 반려견인 이들에게 경주훈련을 시키기도 하셨어요. 하운드들은 운동신경이 굉장히 좋고 매우 충성스러운 동물이에요. 저는 종종 그레이하운드를 작업에 등장시키는데, 긍정과 부정, 안정과 불안정과 같이 세상과 연결된 그 이면의 것들을 전달할 수 있는 대상이라고 생각해요.”

이번 전시에서 가장 대형작인 <Swimmer> 에서 작가는 고대부터 화가들의 관심의 대상이어 온 누드와 물에 대한 그의 해석을 보여준다. 분홍빛으로 칠해진 하늘은 몽환적인 분위기를 자아내고, 선베드 위 투명한 화분은 장면에 꿈같은 연출을 더한다. 화면 속 인물은 무더운 여름날 평화롭게 수영을 즐기고 있는 것일까, 아니면 짙은 녹빛에 눌려 모자이크 속 시공간에 얼어붙은 것일까?</sup>
