Prelude: On the Uneven Road

Seohyun Oh (b. 2000) was born in Korea and is currently based in London. Drawn to the fleeting and subtle qualities of light and air, the artist explores how color and texture can simultaneously hold the ephemeral and the enduring. Her abstract landscapes unfold as immersive spaces in which forms dissolve and re-emerge, hovering between the tangible and the intangible. For the artist, landscape is not a fixed image but a living presence continuously shaped through perception and memory. Through this approach, landscape expands beyond a subject of representation into a contemporary pictorial field where sensation, time, and inner experience intersect.
The six paintings presented in this exhibition trace a passage from the deep darkness of winter toward the faint emergence of spring light. Along this journey are the quiet questions that surfaced throughout the process of making. Her canvases reflect a meditation on the transience of moments sensed along the paths she has walked, on rhythms that flow beyond conscious awareness, and on the tension between a constantly changing world and human perception.
The artist reflects on the series:
“This series began in the coldest part of winter, when the warmth of the year had almost disappeared, and was completed as spring quietly approached. Walking through the winter streets of London under a dark sky, I asked myself what keeps me moving forward, and what continues to make me paint. I never arrived at a clear answer, but I kept walking and kept painting while carrying those questions with me.”
As time accumulated, a series of scenes began to emerge: the moment when ice melts and spring begins, where opposing emotions and subtle temperatures of relationships coexist; places where hope quietly endures; the silent patience of trees and flowers waiting through winter with trust; a forest filled with the scent of violets blooming in the stillness of night; and a summer garden illuminated by moonlight.
These abstract landscapes do not ask to be interpreted. Instead, they quietly await the viewer’s gaze. Within the canvas resides the pace of a mind moving through life, as well as the atmosphere of moments when one pauses along the way. They evoke a poetic space that unfolds along the uneven paths we walk.
The world is constantly in motion. Yet at certain moments, time seems to pause in stillness. Even on an uneven road, we continue to move forward. The questions sensed along that path—the artist’s steps, the passing of time, and the interplay between imagination and reality—are gently inscribed across these six canvases.

The world continues to move, yet sometimes we pause and look up at the sky. This exhibition is close to such a moment: a brief slowing of pace, a quiet time to recall one’s own winter and spring.
오서현(b.2000)는 한국에서 태어나 현재 런던을 기반으로 활동하는 작가이다. 빛과 공기의 덧없고 미묘한 속성에 이끌린 그는 색과 질감이 어떻게 찰나와 영원을 동시에 담아낼 수 있는지를 탐구한다. 그의 추상적 풍경은 형상이 스며들 듯 사라지고 다시 재구성되는 몰입적 공간으로 펼쳐지며, 유형과 무형의 경계 위를 부유한다. 작가에게 풍경은 고정된 이미지가 아니라 인식과 기억 속에서 끊임없이 형성되는 살아 있는 존재이다. 이러한 접근은 풍경을 단순한 재현의 대상이 아니라, 감각과 시간, 그리고 내면의 경험이 교차하는 동시대적 회화의 장으로 확장시킨다.
이번 전시에서 선보이는 여섯 점의 회화는 깊은 겨울의 어둠에서 봄빛의 희미한 기척으로 이어지는 시간의 흐름을 따라간다. 이 여정에는 작업의 과정 속에서 마주한 고요한 질문들이 함께한다. 그의 화면은 그가 걸어온 길 위에서 감각한 순간들의 일시성에 대한 사유이자, 의식의 바깥에서 흐르는 리듬, 그리고 끊임없이 변화하는 세계와 인간의 지각이 맺는 긴장 관계에 대한 명상이다.
작가는 이 시리즈에 대해 다음과 같이 말한다.
“이 시리즈는 한 해의 온기가 거의 사라진 가장 추운 겨울에 시작되어, 봄이 조용히 다가오던 시기에 마무리되었습니다. 어두운 하늘 아래 겨울의 런던 거리를 걸으며, 무엇이 나를 앞으로 나아가게 하는지, 무엇이 나를 계속해서 그림을 그리게 하는지 스스로에게 물었습니다. 분명한 답은 없었지만, 그 질문을 품은 채 계속 걸었고 계속 그렸습니다.”
그 시간이 쌓이며 여러 장면이 태어났다. 얼음이 녹고 봄이 시작될 즈음, 상반된 감정과 관계의 미묘한 온도가 공존하는 순간. 사라지지 않고 남아 희망을 품고 있는 곳. 겨울을 버티는 나무와 꽃의 조용한 기다림과 인내, 그리고 신뢰의 마음. 고요한 밤의 시간에 피어난 제비꽃의 향기로 가득한 숲. 달빛이 비춘 여름밤의 정원.
이 추상적 풍경들은 무엇을 해석해 달라고 요구하지 않는다. 오히려 관람자가 조용히 바라보기를 기다린다. 화면 안에는 삶을 건너가는 마음의 속도와 잠시 멈춰 서는 순간의 공기가 담겨 있다. 그것은 우리가 걸어가는 삶의 길 위에서 문득 피어나는 시적 공간에 대한 사유이기도 하다.
세상은 끊임없이 움직인다. 그러나 어떤 순간에는 시간이 잠시 멈춘 듯 고요해지기도 한다. 울퉁불퉁한 길 위에 서 있더라도 우리는 계속 앞으로 나아간다. 그 길 위에서 감지한 질문들, 그리고 그가 내딛었던 발걸음과 시간, 상상과 현실이 여섯 개의 캔버스 위에 조용히 기록되어 있다.

세상은 계속해서 흘러가지만, 우리는 가끔 멈춰 서서 하늘을 올려다본다. 이 전시는 그런 순간에 가깝다. 잠시 속도를 늦추고, 각자의 겨울과 봄을 떠올려보는 시간.
