LKIF Gallery is pleased to present The Place That Cannot Be, a solo exhibition by Ruben Müller. This exhibition marks the artist’s first solo show in Asia, inviting the audience into a place that, although seemingly nonexistent, evokes a sense of longing. In this imagined space, pomegranates ripen, sheep are gentle and trustworthy, and roses bloom abundantly in the garden. Müller’s paintings, imbued with tranquility and nostalgia, explore the things we deeply yearn for: what we wish to hold on to, what we struggle to remember, and what we fear losing.
The exhibition features 11 works based on Müller’s personal collection of imagery. In these works, the figures are absorbed in simple, everyday activities—taking laundry off the line, cradling a lamb, patting a cow, and picking fruit from a ladder. Through these scenes, Müller captures the universal moments that shape our lives.
The figures in Müller’s paintings are faceless and intentionally undefined, allowing for ambiguity. This allows the viewer to project their own experiences onto the characters, making the story both personal and relatable. Müller explains his choice of indeterminate figures with the quote, “When the name changes, the story becomes about you.” This open-ended approach transforms the works from personal expressions into universal reflections. In particular, the piece Io features a man gently patting a cow in the woods. The trees in the background suggest an outdoor setting, yet the image reveals little about the figure. The title Io is derived from Greek mythology, referring to the lover of Zeus, who transformed her into a cow to hide her from his wife, Hera. By overlaying this myth onto an everyday act, Müller adds layers of meaning and invites endless associations from the viewer.
Throughout the exhibition, a sense of nostalgia pervades the paintings. Time is not fixed to a specific moment, but rather unfolds in a blurred and uncertain way, evoking a longing to preserve something precious. Through their engagement with the works, viewers connect with gestures of care, warmth, valuable efforts, and, of course, cherished memories we hold in our hearts.
As Henri Bergson (1859–1941) once said, memory fades with time, yet longing remains vivid. If a place that cannot exist were before you, what you may wish to see there could be that very ‘faded memory’. What would you wish to encounter in such a place?
Ruben Müller (b. 1990, Mönchengladbach, Germany) lives and works in Dresden. He received his MFA at the University of Fine Arts Dresden in 2024.

이번 전시에는 그가 수집한 개인적인 이미지를 바탕으로 한 11점의 작품이 전시됩니다. 작품 속 인물들은 세탁물을 걷고, 어린 양을 안고, 소를 쓰다듬으며, 사다리에서 과일을 따는 등 일상적인 순간에 몰입하고 있습니다. 인물들은 얼굴을 드러내지 않은 채, 의도적으로 정의되지 않은 모습으로 그려집니다. 이러한 모호성은 관객이 자신만의 경험을 인물에 투영할 수 있게 하여, 이야기의 의미가 개인적이고도 공감 가능한 방식으로 다가오게 만듭니다. 작가는 "이름이 변하면, 이야기는 당신의 이야기로 바뀐다"는 말로 인물이 모호하게 그려진 이유를 설명합니다. 이 열린 접근 방식은 개인적인 표현을 넘어, 보편적인 의미로 작품을 확장시킵니다. 특히 작품 Io에는 숲속에서 소를 쓰다듬는 인물이 등장합니다. 배경의 나무들이 외부 환경을 암시하지만, 이미지 속에서 인물에 대한 정보는 거의 드러나지 않습니다. 제목인 Io는 그리스 신화에서 제우스의 연인 ’이오’의 이름을 차용한 것입니다. 제우스는 자신의 연인을 소로 변하게 하여 아내 헤라에게서 숨기려 했습니다. 작가는 신화적 이야기를 일상적인 행동 위에 겹쳐 놓음으로써, 장면에 의미의 층을 더하고 관객에게 무수한 연상 작용을 이끌어냅니다.
전시 전반에 걸쳐 관객은 향수의 감정을 느낍니다. 장면의 시간은 특정한 시점에 고정되지 않은 채, 무엇인가 소중한 것을 지키고자 하는 그리움을 환기시킵니다. 관객은 작품과 교감함으로써, 보살핌과 따뜻한 손길, 가치 있는 노력, 그리고 물론 우리가 마음속에 간직한 소중한 기억들을 찾아냅니다.
헨리 버그슨(Henri Bergson, 1859–1941)이 말했듯, 기억은 시간이 지날수록 흐려지지만, 그리움은 여전히 선명하게 남습니다. 만약 존재할 수 없는 장소가 눈앞에 있다면, 우리가 그곳에서 보고 싶은 것은 바로 그 '흐릿한 기억'일지도 모릅니다. 당신은 그곳에서 무엇을 보고 싶은가요?
Ruben Müller (b. 1990, Mönchengladbach, Germany) 루벤 뮐러는1990년 독일 묀헨글라트바흐에서 태어났으며 University of Fine Arts Dresden 에서 석사 학위를 취득하였다. 현재 독일 드레스덴에서 거주하며 작업하고 있다.
