LKIF GALLERY presents Rena Kudoh’s solo show, Metamorphopsis Von Boyage.
Rena Kudoh(b.1994, Miyagi, Japan) has produced sculptures and drawings with her own worldview that was influenced by the memories of her childhood. The artist grew up around Japanese animations about girls who fight against the enemies and many other sentai(戦隊) anime. She says she confronted discomfort somewhere in those heroic narratives that show clear dichotomy between friends and foes, and genders. Most of her works do away with those dichotomies.
The artist created five warrior characters that are taking center stage of the show. These warriors are neither friends nor foes, and placed equidistant to each other on the gallery floor. Each warrior has a link to four elements of the universe—fire, water, earth and wind, and has its own weapon.
“Each weapon should be called ‘weapon’ but I wanted them to be everyday objects. I don’t think it’s a weapon that is design to hurt others. I rather think it’s close to something like a talisman or Devine weapon. For example, I made Geo influenced by the element ‘earth’ and it’s about balance and 5 senses. I chose glasses as its weapon. Wearing them keeps the distance between myself and the world, and supplements my sense at the same time. In the drawing of Geo, I depicted the other eye on the glasses. It's like an augmented vision.” - Rena
레나 쿠도는 고질라, 세일러문, 아름다운 전사들이 등장하는 애니메이션과 전대물(戦隊 sentai anime) 을 보며 유년시절을 보낸 세대이다. 그녀의 페인팅과 세라믹 작업들은 상당부분 이러한 유년의 기억에서 온 서사에 많은 영감을 받았다. 그러나 그 속에 담긴 친구와 적을 가르는 분명한 이분법과, 소녀들의 희생에서 불편함을 느꼈고, 이러한 불편함은 그녀의 전반적인 작업에 반영되었다.
이번 전시를 위해 레나는 전사들과 다양한 creature들을 조형하였는데, 성별간 대립과 적과 아군의 대립을 제거하였다. 그들은 소녀처럼 보일지 모르지만, 남자도 여자도 아니며, 친구도 적도 아니다. 이번 전시의 중심에 있는 각 전사 캐릭터들은 우주를 구성하는 네 가지 요소- Fire, Water, Earth, Wind - 에서 영감 받은것으로 각 요소와 관련된 가상의 무기를 가지고 있다.
“각각의 무기는 무기라고 부르는게 맞겠지만, 나는 그것들이 일상적인 물건이 되어야 한다고 생각했습니다. 누군가를 해치려는 무기가 아니라 오히려 부적에 가까운 Devine weapon 이라고 생각해요. Geo 의 경우 균형과 오감을 담았는데, 나는 오감을 보완해주는 많은 것들중 나에게 가장 친숙한 안경을 선택했습니다.안경을 착용하는 것은 나와 세상사이의 거리를 유지시켜 주기도 합니다. 드로잉에서 Geo가 쓰고 있는 안경에는 또 다른 눈을 묘사해 두었어요 마치 증강된 시각처럼요. “ - Rena
