SEUNGHYUN KIM
As Long As It Can Be Seen

July  4 - 31, 2026

LKIF Gallery presents As Long As It Can Be Seen, the fifth solo exhibition by Kim Seunghyun at the gallery. The exhibition continues the ongoing Born-series, in which language operates as a device for invoking images, artworks, and art-historical references embedded in memory.

The Born-series begins with a single declarative sentence:
“I was born to decorate your living room…”

This sentence is repeated across works, each time attached to different names, images, landscapes, or artists. Yet the works do not attempt to depict or reproduce them. What appears on the canvas is only language. The image emerges elsewhere—in the viewer’s memory, perception, and associative recall. If a specific artwork, landscape, or artist becomes visible in the mind, that image becomes part of the work itself.

The exhibition title, As long as it can be seen, defines this condition of visibility. The work does not present images directly, but is completed through the viewer’s capacity to see them mentally. Seeing is therefore not limited to optical perception, but extended into reading, remembering, and reconstructing.

Within the exhibition, text functions as an operative system rather than a descriptive tool. It invokes art-historical references such as Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, Felix Gonzalez-Torres’ Untitled (Perfect Lovers), On Kawara’s Today Series, Ugo Rondinone’s Mountain works, Takashi Murakami’s Superflat, and Helen Frankenthaler’s staining practice. These references are not quoted or represented, but reactivated as images stored within cultural memory.

This invocation extends beyond language into form, materiality, and structure. Paired circular canvases recall temporal synchronization, stacked multi-panel works echo sculptural logics of repetition, stained surfaces engage painterly processes, and increased canvas depth challenges flatness as a visual condition. Language and material operate as parallel systems that generate meaning through overlap rather than representation.

The recurring phrase “I was born to decorate your living room…” further displaces the site of art from institutional display to domestic space. The “living room” becomes a conceptual field in which artworks are not only viewed but co-inhabited. In this shift, artworks exist not as autonomous objects, but as images sustained through memory and lived perception.

In Kim Seunghyun’s practice, text does not describe images. It activates the conditions under which images appear. The work is not completed on the canvas, but in the moment it is read—and as long as it can be seen.

As Long As It Can Be Seen을 개최한다.

“I was born to decorate your living room…”

전시 제목 ‘As long as it can be seen’은 이러한 조건을 설명한다.

문장은 Robert Smithson의 Spiral Jetty, Felix Gonzalez-Torres의 Untitled (Perfect Lovers), On Kawara의 Today series, Ugo Rondinone의 Mountain 연작, Takashi Murakami의 Superflat, Helen Frankenthaler의 회화 방식 등 미술사 속 다양한 작업과 개념을 현재의 공간으로 호출한다.

반복되는 문장 “I was born to decorate your living room…”
