LKIF Gallery is pleased to announce Somewhere, Someone, the first solo exhibition by Spanish artist Gema Quiles.
For this exhibition, Quiles has brought together a series of pieces that continue to explore her interest in creating a fictional natural space—a place of transit and contemplation. The title Somewhere, someone hints at the artist’s focus on how we interact with our environment.
Gema Quiles' new paintings depict metaphorical, pictorial representations of human conditions. Inspired by nature and personal experiences, the artist brings figures and objects into an unknown space where she weaves a narrative about human desires. Throughout the show, the focus revolves around the human figure, which has shifted from being a spectator to becoming an active protagonist within the landscape.
The characters are busy collecting elements from their surroundings. This act of gathering is not just a personal appropriation but one that carries a broader purpose. Each character collects these objects for "someone," suggesting a kind of offering—a gesture of sharing or giving what nature provides. Collecting from nature becomes a ritual act. Walking and observing are the key; the characters don’t just pass through these landscapes—they interact with them in a slow and meaningful way. And each gesture of taking something from the landscape for "someone" suggests a narrative of exchange, care, and offering.
Flowers, fruits, branches, butterflies, water—our trained perception of these objects plays an important role in interpreting the story of her ambiguous setting: a space that doesn’t fully define itself as real or unreal, with time suspended.
Gema Quiles (b. 1994, Vila-real) lives and works in València. Quiles received her BFA from the Universitat Politècnica de València, and earned her MFA in Artistic Production at Universitat Politècnica de València. At Present, she is in a PhD program in Fine Arts of Universitat Politècnica de València. She received the Beca Hábitat Artistic Castelló in 2019, and her recent solo exhibitions include Herrero de Tejada (Madrid), Tuesday to Friday(València), Volta Art Gallery(València), and Seismasuno Projects(Madrid).
엘케이아이에프 갤러리는 헤마 킬레스(1994, 스페인 발렌시아)의 서울 첫 개인전 Somewhere, Someone 을 개최한다.
작가는 인물이 속한 공간/세상에 대한 탐색과 인간조건에 대한 성찰을 교차시키는작업을 지속해왔다.
이번 전시에서 선보이는 헤마 킬레스 신작 8점은 무언가를 가지고자 하는 욕망을 중심으로 전개되는 이야기를 담았다.
작가는 그의 개인적 경험과 자연의 여러 요소들을 엮어 가상의 세계 속에서 벌어지는 상황들을 그려내며 인간이 가진 욕망에 대한 은유적 화면을 보여준다.
‘소유’라는 일상적 행위를 묘사한 킬레스의 작업은 심리적으로만 포착될 법한 개인의 욕구를 드러낸다. 그의 작업에서 인물들(혹은 동물)은 항상 무언가를 가진/가지려하는 모습을 보이는데, 작가는 그것이 채집이든, 수집이든, 혹은 수확의 결과이든, 이러한 행위가 자신을 위한 것인지 누군가를 위한 것인지에 대한 질문을 던진다. 어딘지 알수 없는 공간/풍경속 누구인지 알수 없는 인물들은 능동적인 주인공으로서 존재하며, 관객이 각자의 관점으로 이야기를 유추하도록 유도한다.
그의 작업에 자주 등장하는 모티프 - 꽃, 과일, 새, 말 -들은 작품에 담긴 서사에 일종의 힌트를 제공하지만, 작가는 표정없이 묘사된 인물을 부드럽게 흐르는 물감의 층위로 구성된 배경에 위치키며 작업 전반에 일관된 모호함을 유지한다. 킬레스의 과장된 신체표현은 인간의 욕망과 관련한 관객의 심리를 자극하는 장치이다. 그의 작업은 현실과 가상의 경계즈음일 Somwhere 에서 벌어지는 누군가 Someone의 이야기이자, 우리 모두의 이야기이다.
